Dig Of The Day: Whodini – Five Minutes of Funk (1984)

A small tribute to one of the greatest rap vocals from one of the dopest old-school rap groups, Brooklyn-born, Wyckoff projects raised, the recently unfortunate mr. John Fletcher, a.k.a. Ecstasy, who passed away at 56 years old. He always wore a Zorro-style hat as his trademark.

He was the co-founder of Whodini, the legendary rap group who apparently did the first-ever Hip-Hop music video for their 1983 single Magic’s Wand, which was a tribute track to DJ Mr. Magic. He made music spanning numerous singles and 6 LP’s with Jalil Hutchins, DJ Drew Carter, a.k.a. Grandmaster Dee and Larry Smith who served as their main producer.

Five Minutes of Funk was released as a single on 7″ ; on 12″ b/w Friends and also appears on their 2nd very influential LP titled Escape. Everything mentioned came out for Jive label in 1984.

Produced by Larry Smith (RIP)

On the behalf of Blackout Hip-Hop, I would like to extend my sorrow and condolences to John Fletcher‘s family and friends. One love.
