Sofía Gabanna & Dj Koo – “Universo En Lata” EP

I said it before and I’ll say it again—the Latin countries are killing it with the number of dope female MCs they provide, and Sofía Gabanna for damn sure isn’t an exception. Hailing from Buenos Aires, this Argentinian artist has been giving her love to hip-hop since 2017 when she dropped her first track, and in a short period of time, she gained a significant amount of attention from listeners due to her unique, elegant voice and delivery, but also direct and deep lyricism that resonates with many.
Two years after her last studio album and a few singles in between, she teamed up with DJ Koo for a new project in the form of an EP, dubbed “Universo En Lata” — Universe in a Can — acting as a symbol of many topics squeezed into one short but sweet project. As she was born in 2000, with each and every new release, you can feel her gaining more maturity, and so this 7-track-long EP deals with modern-day issues, urban life, friendships, betrayals, existential reflections, and much more. Sofía uses her street smarts and experiences on an artistic level to provide purposefully painted pictures of conceptual connection for all those who are looking for honesty and cleverness in lyrics that can be applied to their lives.
The beauty of this EP doesn’t come from the lyrics only, but also from the carefully constructed instrumentals as a perfect foundation to build such profound lyricism. DJ Koo still relies on the analog side of production, so even if the beats aren’t fully 90s-based, the influence is highly evident and can be heard throughout the entire project. There aren’t any hardcore jams here, but due to the production style, the dusty element comes from every end, which kind of gives off the atmosphere of the streets that surrounds them, with all the good and the bad. Just like some of her female colleagues in the Latin rap world that have a more melodic approach in their vocals, like LaFé or Mikaela, the beats shouldn’t deviate from the point that gives a lot of room for their voices to ‘dance’ in the frequency spectrum. DJ Koo understood that very well and gave the Argentinian MC a perfect soil to grow tasty fruits.
Even though it’s an extended play, “Universo En Lata” clearly shows Sofía‘s development as a lyricist. This isn’t just a filler in her discography, but a concrete example of how an artist can progress through their career. It’s just a matter of time until she’ll set her mind on releasing a new full album that will just blow people away, as we haven’t even seen half of what she’s capable of.
