Dig Of The Day: The Sequence – Funk You Up (1979)

Active from 1979-1985, we have a female old school Hip-Hop trio originated from Columbia, SC as a group of high school cheerleaders. The group consisted of Cheryl Cook (Cheryl The Pearl), Gwendolyn Chisolm (Blondie), and lead singer/rapper Angie Brown Stone (Angie B.).

Today’s Funk You Up was their top single and the first rap record released by a female group. It was also the second single released by Sugar Hill Records. Parts of Funk You Up were later sampled by Dr. Dre for his ’95 single Keep Their Heads Ringin’ off Friday OST.

RIP Sylvia Robinson (1936-2011)
