Hip-Hop Photographer Ricky Powell Passed Away

Hip-Hop photographer Ricky Powell, who captured images of New York’s cultural greats has died of heart failure at the age of 59.

Ricky Powell got his big break in ’86 by going on tour with the Beastie Boys and Run-DMC, having previously attended high school with Ad-Rock. This developed into further work for Def Jam, including images of LL Cool J, Public Enemy and Eric B & Rakim.

He was immortalized in a Beastie Boys’ song Car Thief – “Homeboy, throw in the towel / Your girl got dicked by Ricky Powell” – but also focused on subjects beyond hip-hop, photographing Andy Warhol, Madonna, Jean-Michel Basquiat, Vin Diesel and more…

BlackoutHipHop extends condolences to Ricky Powell‘s friends, fans and family.
