Corey Writes – The Basics
Halifax, Nova Scotia-based Corey Writes released his latest project, Genres, with tracks from all sorts of genres. But, the track The Basics is dedicated to the core of where Hip-Hop stems from, with a early 90’s feeling. Corey Writes felt he had to pay homage to Old School, so it was a no brainer to create something and also make sure it is the first song on the album.
The 12-track EP demonstrates Writes’ versatility and capability as an artist. The project goes beyond hip hop to live up to its name by channelling multiple genres and styles, with songs ranging from EDM and Rave inspired party anthems to pop, rap and more. Genres shows listeners the dynamic nature of Writes’ talent and offers fans a side of the artist they’ve never heard before.
This project was driven by creativity. I wanted to challenge myself to push my artistic views and approaches to create something different than anything I’ve done in the past. The best part about the whole process was that nothing felt forced; I didn’t wake up one day and say ‘oh I gotta do a track like this or like that’, I heard the beats and I was like ‘ok how can I be different but true to me.
