Today we have, one could say, a slept on early 90’s Staten Island group called The UMC’s<\/strong>, with a “press rewind” type of track called One To Grow On<\/em>.
\nThe group was composed of Haas G<\/strong> and Kool Kim<\/strong>, who released the critically acclaimed, endlessly imaginative album, witty, effervescent by disposition and lyrical flow and always intelligent and fresh, full-length album Fruits of Nature<\/em>, on Wild Pitch Records<\/strong> in 1991. <\/p>\n

When it came to the music, co-producers Hass G<\/strong> and RNS<\/strong> decked it out in vintage soul and old Blue Note-styled tracks, with reams of obscure, idiosyncratic vocal samples tossed in as hooks, breaks, and bridges. Their debut album garnered chart success with the duo’s #1 Billboard Hot Rap Single Blue Cheese<\/em> and #2 Hot Rap Single One To Grow On<\/em> (which contains a sample from “Ursalena” by Bill Cosby). In 1994, the duo released its second album, Unleashed<\/em>, but split up soon after.<\/p>\n

Since the group’s break-up, Haas G<\/strong> (under the names Hassan<\/strong> and Fantom of the Beat<\/strong>) has focused on producing music while Kool Kim<\/strong> reinvented himself as the controversial underground emcee NYOIL<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
