Abandoning over-saturated funk standards in favour of obscure jazz samples, producers such Showbiz, Diamond D, Q Tip and many others besides laid the foundations for the laid back jazz led sound that characterised countless East Coast classics of the early to mid 90s. On the West Coast, Dr Dre’s seminal Chronic LP also broke new ground in terms of production style with a polished classicly LA sound that formed the blueprint for the ‘G Funk’ sound which ruled supreme throughout the early 90s.

Tracklist after jump.
For previous editions check Music Of Substance download page.

Chris Read- Classic Material Intro
Ultramagnetic Mcs – Introduction To The Funk (Excerpt)
Beastie Boys- Jimmy James (Excerpt)
Gang Starr – The Place Where We Dwell (Instrumental)
Chris Read – Theme #3 Scratchapella
Dr Dre Feat Kurupt Rage & Rbx – Lyrical Gangbang (Excerpt)
Gang Starr – Gotta Get Over (Taking Loot)
Showbiz & Ag – Catchin Wreck
Showbiz & Ag Feat Lord Finesse, Big L And Deshaun – Represent
Chubb Rock Feat Rob Swinga & Red Hot Lover Lover Tone – Yabba Dabba Do (Instrumental)
Chubb Rock Feat Rob Swinga & Red Hot Lover Lover Tone – Yabba Dabba Do (Vocal)
Pete Rock & Cl Smooth Feat Grand Puba – Skins
Showbiz & Ag Feat Diamond D – Still Diggin’
Hard Knocks – Strictly From The Bronx
Double Xx Posse – The Headcracker
Positive K – Flower That Grows In Brooklyn
Brand Nubian – Steal Ya Ho
Black Sheep – On The Wall
Apache – Gangsta Bitch (Loop)
Diamond D – Best Kept Secret (45 King Remix)
Supercat – Ghetto Red Hot (Bobby Konders Mix) (Loop)
Afrika Bambaataa Presents Time Zone – Zulu War Chant
Keefy Keef – Cause I’M Keefy Keef
Demon Boys – Glimmety Glammety (Don Gorgon Mix)
Gang Starr – Now You’Re Mine (Instrumental)
Gang Starr Feat.
