Fifteen years later, the record stands as a unique outlier in the group’s catalog. Not only was it the first Jedi Mind Tricks LP released through their own independent imprint Enemy Soil, but it also remains the only album in their three-decade history made without a single beat from co-founder and producer Stoupe the Enemy of Mankind. For a group whose sonic identity since the mid-1990s rested on the contrast between Stoupe’s cinematic samples and the gruff delivery of frontman Vinnie Paz, the album served as a crucial test in a changing independent hip-hop market.

Leaving Babygrande Records and Stepping Out Without Stoupe

To understand why Violence Begets Violence sounds so stripped-down and direct, it helps to look at events inside the camp between 2008 and 2011. Following their sixth album, A History of Violence, in November 2008—which marked the return of third member Jus Allah on the mic—the group severed ties with longtime label Babygrande Records. Seeking full creative and financial control, Vinnie Paz launched Enemy Soil. During that transition, the members stayed busy with side ventures: the Paz-led collective Army of the Pharaohs dropped The Unholy Terror in March 2010, and Paz followed up in June 2010 with his solo debut, Season of the Assassin, where he worked with a wide roster of outside beatmakers.

When it came time to record a new Jedi Mind Tricks album, however, the group hit a wall. Kevin Baldwin, known as Stoupe the Enemy of Mankind, had lost his enthusiasm for crafting traditional hardcore rap beats and poured his energy into genre-blending side projects like the downtempo duo Dutch (which released A Bright Cold Day in 2010) and Vespertina. As Vinnie Paz explained in a statement prior to the album’s release (The Industry Cosign), Stoupe submitted a few early ideas for the record, but both Paz and Jus Allah could tell that his heart was no longer in making JMT music. Rather than waiting through an indefinite hiatus for Stoupe’s spark to return, Paz and Jus Allah made a pragmatic call: they moved forward as a two-man vocal unit backed by tour turntablist DJ Kwestion, outsourcing the production to a crew of underground beatmakers from the US and Europe.

Sonic Direction Without the Architect: Who Handled the Boards?

Stepping into the shoes of the producer behind underground classics like Violent by Design (2000) and Servants in Heaven, Kings in Hell (2006) was a major challenge. For over a decade, Stoupe had given the group its signature polish—flipping orchestral passages, operatic choirs, Latin guitars, and film dialogue into tight boom-bap arrangements. Instead of trying to find one replacement producer to mimic that formula across a full LP, Vinnie Paz and Jus Allah spread the 14 tracks (running just under 47 minutes) across nine different beatmakers.

The heaviest lifting fell to Massachusetts producer Craig Lanciani, known as C-Lance, who anchored four tracks: the opener “Burning the Mirror,” “Imperial Tyranny,” “Willing a Destruction Onto Humanity,” and “The Sacrilege of Fatal Arms“. Having built chemistry with Paz on Season of the Assassin, C-Lance leaned into minor-key piano loops, dramatic strings, and hard drum programming tailored to longtime JMT listeners. Fellow producer Dylan Guerin, credited as Hypnotist Beats, followed a similar blueprint on the album’s two main singles—the haunting “When Crows Descend Upon You” (which received a music video) and the compact “Target Practice“.

The strongest moments on the project happen when outside producers either bring their own flavor or capture the eerie tension of classic JMT naturally. New Jersey producer Mr. Green delivered one of the standout instrumentals on the album with “Design in Malice“. Built around a vocal loop of the Russian song “Polyushko Pole” (Meadowlands), Mr. Green’s beat rides a gritty nineties-style boom-bap groove. Meanwhile, producer Nero came closest to Stoupe’s dark atmosphere on “Bloodborn Enemy”—complete with Rakim vocal cuts by DJ Kwestion on the hook—and the reflective closer “Street Lights”. European producers also left their mark: Germany’s Shuko laced “Weapon of Unholy Wrath,” French beatmaker Junior Makhno handled “Fuck Ya Life,” and UK producer Illinformed (with additional production from mixing engineer Scott “Supe” Stallone) provided a Caribbean-tinged backdrop for “Chalice“.

Lyrics, Mic Chemistry, and Guest Features

Lyrically, Violence Begets Violence sticks closely to the rugged battle-rap territory that made the Philadelphia group a staple of the independent circuit. Vinnie Paz commands the spotlight with his raspy baritone, weaving together street braggadocio, conspiracy lore, boxing nods, religious imagery, and political frustration. Unlike Legacy of Blood or Servants in Heaven, Kings in Hell, where Paz balanced the hostility with personal storytelling cuts like “Before the Great Collapse” or “Razorblade Salvation,” this album keeps its foot on the gas throughout.

Having Jus Allah present on every track gives the record the feel of a traditional two-MC tag team. His rigid, multi-syllabic cadence and bleak punchlines offer a sharp contrast to Paz’s booming vocal presence, particularly on “Burning the Mirror” and “Willing a Destruction Onto Humanity”. Objectively, however, that relentless aggression is also where the album shows its limitations: without much thematic variety or introspective breathing room, several mid-album verses rely on familiar shock-value bars that feel more routine than inspired.

A well-chosen lineup of guest MCs helps break up the formula. Alongside affiliates from their inner circle—including King Magnetic on “Imperial Tyranny,”Blacastan on “Fuck Ya Life,” and Demoz appearing on “When Crows Descend Upon You” and the Grand Finale-produced “Carnival of Souls“—two outside collaborations elevate the tracklist. The first is “Design in Malice,” featuring New Jersey veterans Young Zee and Pacewon of the Outsidaz, whose unpredictable flow and street humor inject fresh energy into the album. The second curveball is Fu-Schnickens veteran Chip Fu on “Chalice,” whose rapid-fire, dancehall-inflected delivery gives the record its most refreshing detour.

Critical Reception, Chart Numbers, and Legacy

Upon its release in October 2011, Violence Begets Violence posted respectable numbers for an independent rap record.
