British rapper Sway, one of the key figures in the rise of UK hip-hop during the 2000s, has died aged 44.<\/p>\n
Sway began his career in the early 2000s, initially as a member of Phynix Crew and One before establishing himself as a solo artist. Known for his sharp, technically versatile flow, humour and storytelling, he occupied his own space between British hip-hop, grime and the increasingly commercial UK rap scene.<\/p>\n
His breakthrough came while he was still fully independent. In 2005, before even releasing his debut album, Sway became the first unsigned artist to win Best Hip-Hop Act at the MOBO Awards, beating a field that included US stars 50 Cent and The Game. The victory became an important moment for British rap at a time when UK artists were still struggling for recognition alongside their American counterparts.<\/p>\n
A year later he released his acclaimed debut album This Is My Demo. Featuring tracks such as \u201cUp Your Speed\u201d and \u201cLittle Derek\u201d, the album was nominated for the 2006 Mercury Prize. \u201cLittle Derek\u201d, with its memorable line about ending up \u201cin HMV instead of HMP\u201d, also became Sway\u2019s first UK Top 40 single.<\/p>\n
Remaining closely associated with independence through his Dcypha Productions label, Sway later partnered with Akon\u2019s Konvict Music. His second album, The Signature LP, followed in 2008 and featured Akon among its guests.<\/p>\n
Sway achieved his biggest commercial success in the early 2010s. \u201cStill Speedin\u2019\u201d, featuring Kano and built around a sample of Black Box\u2019s \u201cRide on Time\u201d, reached the UK Top 20 in 2011. The Flux Pavilion-produced \u201cLevel Up\u201d went even further the following year, reaching No. 8.<\/p>\n
Across his career, Sway worked with an unusually broad range of artists. His collaborators included Ed Sheeran, Riz Ahmed, Kano, Akala, Tinchy Stryder, Donae\u2019o and the Mitchell Brothers, while US rappers Lupe Fiasco and Chamillionaire also sought him out. He even crossed into rock, appearing on Kaiser Chiefs\u2019 2008 album Off With Their Heads.<\/p>\n
Sway released five studio albums and two EPs during his career and also briefly appeared as Ross Rosten in the first episode of Top Boy in 2011.<\/p>\n
