Exactly 25 years ago<\/strong> today \u2014 on August 21, 2001 \u2014 Derek Barbosa<\/strong>, professionally known as Chino XL<\/strong>, delivered his sophomore studio album, I Told You So<\/strong><\/a>. Following his critically acclaimed 1996 debut Here to Save You All <\/strong><\/a>(Blackout Hip-Hop Album Review), hip-hop heads waited half a decade for a follow-up. The project that arrived was a dense, hard-hitting East Coast statement that served both as a showcase of elite penmanship and a clear case study in major-label friction.<\/p>\n

Warner Bros. Fallout and the Move to Metro Records<\/strong><\/p>\n

The road to I Told You So<\/strong> was notoriously complicated. Chino inked a deal with Warner Bros<\/strong>. Records in late 1997, aiming for an April 1999 release under catalog number 47710. Pushed back repeatedly, the campaign finally seemed on track in early 2001 with promo copies of the lead 12-inch single \u201eLet ‘Em Live<\/strong><\/a>\u201c featuring Kool G Rap<\/strong>. However, Warner abruptly folded its Black music division \u2014 widely viewed as fallout from their public, costly disputes with Prince<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Dropped without warning, Chino took the completed masters to the independent imprint Metro Records<\/strong>, which pressed the CD for an August 2001 rollout. Remnants of the major-label era remained intact across the disc, most notably on \u201eThat Would Be Me<\/strong><\/a>\u201c, where Chino boldly raps, \u201eWho the only star on WB? That would be me!<\/em>\u201c.<\/p>\n

Production Architecture: Wiz’s Raw Grime Meets Dilla\u2019s Swing<\/strong><\/p>\n

Sonically, the core of the album belongs to longtime collaborator Nick Wiz<\/strong>, who laid down aggressive drums and dark samples on joints like \u201eWhat You Got<\/strong>\u201c, \u201eYou Don’t Want It<\/strong><\/a>\u201c, and the standout Kool G Rap feature. Wiz provided the raw backbone needed for Chino’s relentless, breathless cadences, even if some arrangements felt slightly sparse by early-2000s standards.<\/p>\n
