On this day, July 28, 2006<\/strong>, Detroit emcee Obie Trice<\/strong> released his sophomore album Second Round’s on Me<\/strong><\/a> via Shady and Interscope Records<\/strong>. Exactly two decades later, the project remains one of the rawest and most authentic releases from Shady Records’ prime era. When Obie debuted in 2003 with Cheers<\/strong>, listeners received a celebratory, club-ready album packed with major hits from Dr. Dre and Eminem<\/strong>. However, three years later, the climate surrounding his follow-up was drastically different. Second Round’s on Me was not a victory lap; it was an unfiltered response to street violence, personal loss, and the harsh realities of Detroit<\/strong>.<\/p>\n

Street Trauma, Lodged Bullets, and Losing a Brother<\/strong><\/p>\n

The creation of the album was heavily overshadowed by tragic events<\/strong> in late 2005 and early 2006. On New Year\u2019s Eve 2005, Obie survived a shoot-out<\/strong> on Detroit’s Lodge Freeway. Multiple rounds hit his vehicle, with one bullet striking the back of his head. Doctors deemed surgery too risky, leaving the lead fragment permanently lodged in his skull.<\/p>\n

Just months later, in April 2006, DeShaun “Proof” Holton of D12<\/strong> was killed<\/strong> outside a Detroit nightclub. Proof was a pillar of the local scene, Obie\u2019s close friend, and the man who initially introduced him to Eminem<\/strong>. These tragedies completely shifted the album’s emotional tone. Channeling paranoia and grief into the booth, Obie crafted tracks like “Cry Now<\/strong>” and “Violent<\/strong><\/a>,” delivering a level of street realism that couldn’t be fabricated.<\/p>\n
