She gained attention during the <strong>Roxanne Wars<\/strong>, a legendary series of Hip-Hop rivalries in the mid 1980s that produced some of Hip Hop&#8217;s earliest and most influential diss records.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0ih8ljrPWL8\" width=\"100%\" height=\"500\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><br \/>\n<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Born in Brownsville, Brooklyn, New York, she began her music career in 1983 when she became a member of a local group called <strong>The Playgirls<\/strong>. <strong>Sparky D<\/strong> broke through after releasing &#8220;<strong>Sparky&#8217;s Turn (Roxanne You&#8217;re Through)<\/strong>&#8221; in 1985, produced by <strong>Spyder-D<\/strong>. It helped fuel the <strong>Roxanne Wars<\/strong>, one of Hip-Hop&#8217;s most influential battle rap rivalries.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/_Zmq-6oqfz8\" width=\"100%\" height=\"500\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><br \/>\n<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><strong>Sparky D<\/strong> was one of the first female rappers to secure a major corporate recording deal, making the path for future artists. She stepped away from the rap industry in the early 1990s. After struggling with addiction and surviving domestic violence, she moved to Atlanta, Georgia, in 2004. There, she renewed her life through Christ and reinvented herself as a gospel rapper and minister. She went on to release gospel and Christian-themed Hip-Hop music, and in 2007 she won the <em>Gospel Choice Award<\/em> for her faith-based track, &#8220;<strong>This Is for the Church<\/strong>&#8220;.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/LLpE6kfGyk0\" width=\"100%\" height=\"500\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><br \/>\n<\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Although her mainstream recording career was relatively brief, <strong>Sparky D<\/strong>&#8216;s impact on battle rap and the rise of women in Hip-Hop remains undeniable. Her music and legacy will continue to inspire generations of MCs.
