Three Decades of Darkness: How “Nocturnal” Defined the Brooklyn Underground<\/strong><\/p>\n

Today, June 18<\/strong>, 2026, marks exactly three decades<\/strong> since the release of one of the grittiest, darkest, and most influential underground albums of East Coast hip-hop’s golden era. When Jahmal “Rock” Bush<\/strong> (aka Rockness Monsta<\/strong>) and the late, great Sean “Ruck” Price<\/strong> (later known simply as Sean Price<\/strong>) dropped their debut album Nocturnal<\/strong><\/a> under the name Heltah Skeltah<\/strong> on June 18, 1996<\/strong>, they faced immense pressure. They had to live up to the massive standard set by their fellow Boot Camp Clik<\/strong> (BCC) members. Prior to this, Black Moon\u2019s Enta Da Stage<\/strong> in 1993 and Smif-N-Wessun\u2019s Dah Shinin\u2019<\/strong> in 1995 had already redefined the New York hardcore scene. Nocturnal<\/strong> arrived as the third chapter of this legendary run, demonstrating that Brooklyn’s “Bucktown”<\/strong> had a seemingly bottomless well of raw talent.<\/p>\n

The Duck Down Transition and Brooklyn Roots<\/strong><\/p>\n

The year 1996 represented a major business turning point for the entire Boot Camp Clik<\/strong>. Frustrated by financial disputes with Nervous Records<\/strong>, BCC founders Buckshot<\/strong> and Dru Ha<\/strong> decided to take control of their own catalog, launching the independent imprint Duck Down Music<\/strong> and securing a key distribution deal with Priority Records<\/strong>. The stage was set by the late 1995 single “Leflaur Leflah Eshkoshka<\/strong>,” released by the temporary supergroup Fab 5<\/strong>, which joined Heltah Skeltah<\/strong> with the O.G.C. trio<\/strong>. The track became a massive underground hit, peaking at number 75<\/strong> on the Billboard Hot 100 and remaining the most commercially successful single in BCC history. The buzz and financial backing generated by this single provided the necessary budget to record the album Nocturnal<\/strong> in top-tier studios like Chung King<\/strong> and D&D<\/strong>.<\/p>\n
