Today in our “Dig Of The Day” section, we\u2019re taking it back to 2006 and a project that defines the very essence of being a “lyricist.” Chino XL<\/strong>‘s third studio album, Poison Pen<\/strong>, was released on January 31st via Activate Entertainment, reminding the world why Derek Barbosa is frequently hailed as a “Jedi MC” by his peers.<\/p>\n

Following a five-year hiatus and various industry struggles with major labels, Chino returned in his signature fashion\u2014aggressive and technically flawless. The album is a masterclass in rhyme construction, with the track “Wordsmith<\/strong>” serving as the prime example. On this cut, Chino spits incredibly complex schemes that practically require the lyrics in front of you to fully appreciate the execution.<\/p>\n

Sonic-wise, the production is quite diverse. The title track flips a Portishead sample (“Humming”) to set a dark, prophetic tone, while other backdrops were provided by Dan Charnas, Carlos Bess, and the late Proof<\/strong> of D12. Proof both produced and featured on the melancholic track “Our Time<\/strong>,” which carries a heavy emotional weight today. Other notable features include Killah Priest on the high-intensity “Beastin'” and The Beatnuts on “Don’t Fail Me Now”.<\/p>\n

Whether he’s dropping ruthless punchlines or getting personal on tracks like “Can’t Change Me,” Chino used this release to solidify his status as one of the most intelligent MCs to ever pick up a mic. For fans of hardcore lyricism, this one is an absolute essential.<\/p>\n
