In 1996, he was in a car on the New Jersey Turnpike being driven by his friend and <strong>Junior M.A.F.I.A.<\/strong> groupmate<strong> Lil\u2019 Cease <\/strong>and his girlfriend at the time, rapper<strong> Charli Baltimore<\/strong>. They were using a loaner car with faulty brakes, and it soon became ugly.<br \/>\nCease looked back on the accident in a 2015 interview with VladTV.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWe were turning around the corner [onto the expressway] and the s*** just spun out of control; we crossed to the other side of the road and hit the rail,\u201d he recalled. \u201cAnd that\u2019s how [Biggie] f***ed up his leg.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p class=\"p-count-6\"><strong>Biggie<\/strong>\u2019s leg was broken in several places, and he would have to spend months in rehabilitation. He was able to start moving using a wheelchair. <strong>Biggie<\/strong>\u2019s recovery was going well and his condition began to improve in late 1996, able to move around with some help. He wasted no time in getting back to work on <em>Life After Death<\/em>.<\/p>\n<div id=\"3300731_node_11\" class=\"ng-binding ng-scope\">\n<p class=\"p-count-7\">One night, hip-hop\u2019s \u201cFashion King\u201d <strong>Groovey Lew<\/strong> was at the studio when <strong>Biggie<\/strong> came in to record the track <em>\u201cKick In the Door.\u201d<\/em> According to <em>It Was All a Dream: Biggie and the World That Made Him<\/em>, <strong>Lew<\/strong> watched <strong>Biggie<\/strong> listen to the beat of the song over and over until he was ready to go into the booth. When he was ready, <strong>Lil\u2019 Cease<\/strong> wheeled him up to the microphone, and he knocked out his lyrics in one fell swoop.<\/p>\n<p><iframe title=\"YouTube video player\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/78SV9tguyVM\" width=\"100%\" height=\"344\" frameborder=\"0\" allowfullscreen=\"allowfullscreen\"><span style=\"display: inline-block; width: 0px; overflow: hidden; line-height: 0;\" data-mce-type=\"bookmark\" class=\"mce_SELRES_start\">\ufeff<\/span><\/iframe><\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cThat man sat in that wheelchair and did that verse. In one take, [just] off the head! Genius s***!\u201d said Lew. \u201cI was like, Yo, you the illest. He was like, \u2018Groove, get outta here, B!\u2019 I was like \u2018I\u2019m good. I\u2019m going home.\u2019 I just left the studio. That was history.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<div id=\"3300731_node_16\" class=\"ng-binding ng-scope\">\n<p id=\"h-he-continued-to-use-a-cane-until-he-died\">He continued to use a cane until he died. In early 1997, <strong>Biggie<\/strong> was continuing his preparation for the release of <em>Life After Death <\/em>in March. Throughout that time, he was still using a cane \u2014 something that he would have had to keep using for the rest of his life.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"3300731_node_17\" class=\"ng-binding ng-scope\">\n<p class=\"p-count-10\">The cane ended up being an advantage to his image as he approached his second album. He filmed the music video for his future No. 1 single \u201c<strong>Hypnotize<\/strong>\u201d wearing a now-iconic suit, bolstered by a sophisticated-looking cane to complete the look (and help him stand).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"3300731_node_18\" class=\"ng-binding ng-scope\">\n<p class=\"p-count-11\">Sadly, <strong>Biggie<\/strong> wouldn\u2019t get to see the success of his hard work on <em>Life After Death<\/em>.
