James Mtume<\/strong>, a musician who recorded with jazz greats before leading the R&B group Mtume<\/strong>, has died at 75.<\/p>\n

Following dozens of records and jazz sessions with his father Jimmy Heath, Don Cherry, Herbie Hancock, Miles Davis, Sonny Rollins, Pharoah Sanders, McCoy Tyner, Lonnie Liston Smith, Gato Barbieri & Ramsey Lewis <\/strong>he released Kiss This World Goodbye<\/em>, the debut album of his jazz, funk, and R&B hybrid band Mtume<\/strong> in 1978. After 1980\u2019s In Search of the Rainbow Seekers<\/em>, the band released 1983\u2019s Juicy Fruit<\/em>. The title track became the band\u2019s biggest hit, and was sampled on the Notorious B.I.G.<\/strong>\u2019s Juicy<\/em>. The band followed it with two more albums: 1984\u2019s You, Me and He<\/em> and 1986\u2019s Theater of the Mind<\/em>.<\/p>\n

Mtume<\/strong> was later credited on songs by Mary J. Blige, R. Kelly & K-Ci & Jo-Jo<\/strong>. Mtume<\/strong> became a radio personality for New York City\u2019s KISS 98.7 FM. <\/p>\n
