While the powerhouses of the loose Native Tongue <\/strong>collective were undoubtedly De La Soul, A Tribe Called Quest<\/strong> and the Jungle Brothers<\/strong>, the wider family threw up some intriguing groups and unforgettable records.<\/p>\n

Black Sheep<\/strong> \u2013 the duo of Dres <\/strong>and Mr Lawnge<\/strong> \u2013 were a natural fit for the Native Tongue<\/strong> vibe, displaying the same kind of wit and humour as their counterparts, with an off-kilter approach that helped them stand out.<\/p>\n

While they only released one truly amazing album \u2013 their debut A Wolf in Sheep\u2019s Clothing <\/em>was a standout in 1991, one of hip-hop\u2019s best years for LP\u2019s \u2013 it spawned five unique singles, with this the first one that really garnered any attention.<\/p>\n

While it wasn\u2019t a smash hit outside of hip-hop circles, it showcased their approach perfectly \u2013 sinuous rhymes, clever wordplay and a hint of flirtation. If the drums sound familiar, it\u2019s because it\u2019s the same Joe Farrell<\/strong> break \u2013 the intro to 1974\u2019s Upon This Rock<\/em> \u2013 that Kanye West<\/strong> later used for Gone<\/em>. Add in some horns from Herb Alpert<\/strong> and The Tijuana Brass<\/strong> and you\u2019ve got a funky little earworm.<\/p>\n

They return to the same Joe Farrell<\/strong> well for the flip, Butt\u2026 In the Meantime<\/em>, because if the break isn\u2019t broke, don\u2019t fix it. Previously unavailable on 7\u201d, this brace of 1991 sureshots is the perfect introduction to the idiosyncrasies of the Native Tongue<\/strong> era.<\/p>\n
