British-born photographer Janette Beckman<\/strong> began her career at the dawn of punk rock working for music magazines The Face<\/em> and Melody Maker<\/em>. She shot bands including the Clash<\/strong>, the Specials<\/strong>, Boy George<\/strong> as well as three Police<\/strong> album covers. Drawn to the underground Hip-Hop scene, she moved to NYC in 1983 and photographed pioneers such as Run DMC, Slick Rick, Salt-N-Pepa, Grand Master Flash, LL Cool J<\/strong> and more. <\/p>\n

Hip Hop Years New York 1982\u20131992<\/em> is Beckman<\/strong>‘s fifth book. The cover has Daddy O<\/strong> from Stetsasonic <\/strong>in East New York in ’88. In 36 pages there is a selection of Beckman<\/strong>‘s most prolific Hip-Hop photos. From the first Hip-Hop show to come to Europe in ’82 to legendary emcees posing at famous spots like LL Cool J<\/strong> in front of Jones Diner, Lafayette Street NYC and Boogie Down Productions <\/strong>outside the Police Station on East 5th street, the book offers a retrospective glance to the roots of the culture. <\/p>\n
