Clyde Stubblefield<\/strong>, drummer for James Brown<\/strong>‘s band, passed away at 73 last Saturday. His manager advised that cause was kidney failure. Clyde drummed his way to immortality back in 1969 when he recorded a solo for James Brown<\/strong>\u2019s Funky Drummer<\/em>. That brief snippet of percussion excellence became the foundation of Hip-Hop\u2019s sampling era. Public Enemy\u2019s \u201cFight the Power,\u201d LL Cool J\u2019s \u201cMama Said Knock You Out,\u201d Boogie Down Productions\u2019 \u201cSouth Bronx,\u201d Sinead O\u2019Connor\u2019s \u201cI Am Stretched on Your Grave,\u201d George Michael\u2019s \u201cFreedom! \u201990\u201d and Kenny G\u2019s \u201cG-Bop\u201d are just a few of the hit records where the Funky Drummer<\/em> break appeared as a sample, and over a thousand more, from the 1980s to the present day. It made Clyde Stubblefield<\/strong> perhaps the most sampled drummer in history.<\/p>\n
