Video: Stormzy – Mel Made Me Do It

With only three days in, the newest release by Stormzy managed to rack up more than 2 mil of views on YouTube. After almost three years of silence after the big boom with his highly-acclaimed second studio album Heavy Is The Head, the south London rapper has outdone himself once again.

I been the G.O.A.T. for so long, I guess it’s not exciting when I win;
Boo-hoo, someone grab the violins.
Every time I try a ting, top bins like Haile when he sings;
So of course they don’t like me, I’m the king.

Heavily focused on a 10-minute long celebration of the ‘black British excellence’, Stormzy has managed to gather an impressive number of black celebrities for a single goal, and that’s to show the great power flowing between them which was instantly praised by many. It’s a pure flex, to put it bluntly, both lyrically and visually, but from a cultural point of what it ultimately represents, combined with a minimalistic, but yet powerful bass-driven Knox Brown instrumental, the whole audio/video experience can easily be put among the best releases of the year.

Of course, the music video takes most of your attention here as the number of cameos is overwhelming, and for a reason. Featuring the likes of Usain Bolt, Headie One, Dave, Little Simz, Trevor Nelson, and Ian Wright, just to name a few, with even some unexpected names like Louis Theroux, Jonathan Ross, and even the Portuguese football manager José Mourinho, are here to support the cause in full power. On top of that, the song includes a guest appearance by Stylo G, a British-Jamaican lyricist, and also a nearly-poetic narration done by the British actress Michaela Coel, written by Wretch 32, for full closure and final themed impact.
Needless to say, the black community is overjoyed with this project and social media has exploded since the song dropped. Mel made him do it, and boy we’re glad she did. And who’s Mel, you’re asking? That’s Melissa Holdbrook-Akposoe aka Melissa’s Wardrobe; Stormzy’s personal stylist since the year of 2019, to be more exact, since they got reunited for the filming of his music video Vossi Bop, and now she has a vicious banger named after her.

After being in the dark for quite some time regarding the solo releases, now the owner of the first grime album that climbed to the very top of the UK Albums Charts and won the British Album of the Year reward, we finally know that the Norbury-born rapper that took the scene by storm is cooking something serious, and the anticipation is growing in a fast pace.
