Video: Pete Rock interview on The Pace Report
2013 marks the 40th anniversary of Hip-Hop and the City of New York via the SummerStage celebrations this past summer, showcased and sponsored many concerts with all the legendary and iconic rap artists and groups that helped shape this music. The concerts celebrated the DJ and lyricists ranging from Rakim to DJ Red Alert.
The closing concert for this year’s 2013 SummerStage Hip-Hop anniversary was with the legendary DJ Premier and Pete Rock battle at East River Park, the very park where the Hip-Hop classic film “Wild Style” was shot over 30 years ago. The DJ set was free to the public and was hosted by the Lyricist Lounge. The battle was attended by well over 4,500 Hip-Hop heads.
I had the honor to sit down and interview Pete Rock before his set and reflect on his 30 years in Hip-Hop as a emcee and iconic producer who’s produced for the likes of Nas, Kayne West, Public Enemy and endless other rappers. In addition to him producing, Pete is a critically-acclaimed radio disc jockey spinning records all over the world. This year he reunited with his long-time cohort C.L. Smooth for the 25 anniversary of their debut album “Mecca and the Soul Brother.”
