R.I.P. E-Love, LL’s Hypeman & the guy in the Public Enemy Logo

Damien Matthias, better known as E-Love, has passed away. A significant behind-the-scenes presence, he was a multi-platinum, award-winning writer, producer, and director. Projects he contributed to sold over 35 million records. In 2021, he was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
E-Love was best known for his close ties to Def Jam Records and his role in the rise of LL Cool J, one of the label’s earliest stars. He made his producer debut in 1985 as a co-producer for LL’s landmark debut “Radio” and later contributed to the artist’s mainstream success. E-Love helped launch the careers of influential artists such as Tupac Shakur and John Forté.
A unique aspect of his legacy is that his silhouette is featured on the Public Enemy logo. It is based on a photo of E-Love standing next to LL Cool J. Chuck D, who practiced graphic design at the time, adapted it for the famous logo in the mid-1980s.
In the 90s, E-Love joined American Conservatory Theatre (ACT) in San Francisco to pursue film and video production. In Los Angeles, he established his own production company which incorporated film, music, and sports management. He produced numerous music videos and independent films.
E-Love will be fondly remembered by friends, collaborators, and fans.
May he rest in peace.
