Marley Marl talks to Clyde Stubblefield

Arguably, no break beat has been sampled more in hip-hop than the Clyde Stubblefield percussion solo heard on the 1970 James Brown single “Funky Drummer”. First played by DJ Kool Herc at 1520 Sedgwick jam in 1973, you can hear it in many of the genre’s classic tracks, including Public Enemy’s “Fight the Power”, LL’s “Boomin System” and “Jump” by Kriss Kross.
