‘Madvillainy Demos’ Now Available On Spotify (And On Vinyl)
In the early days of the digital era when CD’s were still a huge thing, artists and record companies were still adjusting to the new technology and also trends that came with it. One of the bad trends was heavy leakage of studio projects that were still in the making, and Madvillain‘s “Madvillainy” was no exception. It was about two years before its release that many demos were leaked online with people worldwide downloading early versions of what we consider today legendary tracks. Those from that era that were bumpin’ to MF DOOM‘s early vocal cuts know that the official release featured both small and big changes, and how the leaked material created a cult of madvillains throughout the entire world. The irony was, they almost dropped the whole project because of the leakage, but in the end that very leakage proved to be an unintentional marketing success.
Today, Madlib‘s and DOOM‘s collab album is considered one of the best albums ever released in hip-hop, and since its release in 2004 nothing was the same.
As we all were celebrating 20 years since this gem came out, Stones Throw Records were doing the same by dropping many Madvillainy-related stuff, including various merch, remastered and audiophile editions, but also a special version made entirely of the mentioned demos, therefore dubbed “Madvillainy Demos”. Initially released on tape in 2008 as a part of a ‘Madvillain box set’, the demo album was released on vinyl for the first time in 2024 to celebrate two decades of the album, of course, with a new cover photo done by Eric Coleman, and mastered by the original “Madvillainy” mastering engineer Dave Cooley.
After being made available worldwide, as from today, the “Madvillainy Demos” album is also available on Spotify for all the Madvillain fans with a sweet tooth, but were unable to snatch it on a cassette or vinyl. I’m unsure if the album will be available on other streaming services, but I guess Spotify will do for the most of us.
If you’re a wax collector, though, you can snatch it in the US for 30$ Stones Throw website, while for the European citizens the better option is to order from the German-based website HHV.
