Jonny Paycheck & DJ Icewater – Darmel’s House (Mixtape)
Good Records NYC has been an essential stop on downtown Manhattan vinyl circuit for the better part of a decade. And here shop bawse Jonny “Paycheck” Sklute – who’s split his years on the planet between his hometown Yay Area and adopted Rotten Apple – delves into his ’90s hip-hop-nurtured past with a DJ Icewater-assisted mix reflective of his two main geographical influences. Darmel’s House‘s selections move easily from the hissy bliss of cassette-only Oakland raps to East Coast underground classics, with the requisite stop in ATL – the BPMs never straying too far above nod-a-lot pace.
Words from Jonny:
All area massive and crew: if you like obscure 1990s-era hip-hop and have shoeboxes full of cassettes in a closet somewhere, this mix is for you. I guarantee a few of these tunes have never been heard at all, and others have never been heard quite this way. Artisinally crafted with locally sourced ingredients from the labs of Kemetic Suns Green Grocers in collaboration with the Dumb Rappers Need Teaching Education Fund.
