C-Tru Ft. Snoop Dogg & Lysee J – “California Party”
It’s just another sunny day in California and C-Tru is with Snoop Dogg at a Beverly Hills mansion filming the music video for their latest song “California Party”. Larry King crashes the video shoot having heard the commotion from two houses down and police arrive soon after getting calls from the neighbors for a noise violation. “We should have invited the whole block to our party,” C-Tru jokes. Snoop blazes an extra large blunt of the finest herb and smiles. The track, produced by Jun Lee and featuring singer Lysee J (with co-production from Swissivory), is an ode to the West Coast’s unique culture, diversity, and the carefree spirit of California living.
Raised in California, C-Tru grew up influenced by the icons that put the west coast on the map like 2pac, Dr. Dre and of course Snoop Dogg. But being an Asian-American hip-hop artist had its challenges and he frequently faced cultural discrimination. Instead of quitting, he embraced his underdog status and worked his way up from the local battle rap scene and got his first big break by winning the nation-wide Energizer Freestylin’ Music competition in 2007. He would go on to embark on several tours in Europe, while also dropping numerous mixtape and album features.
Already having notched number 1 charting songs in Europe and Asia, his emergence in the U.S music scene comes as no surprise. In 2017 he rapped alongside east coast hip-hop superstar DMX on the Swissivory produced track “The Dog in Me”. So it was only fitting that his next track would be with the legend from the west, Snoop Dogg. “It’s life’s challenges that make us what we are. It’s the reason DMX, Snoop and I can connect and make these powerful records,” says C-Tru. “The struggle, and overcoming it, is the common bond. And through music, we have the opportunity to unite people of all backgrounds, cultures and beliefs.”
