Brooklyn playground officially renamed Adam Yauch Park
A year after cancer claimed his life, Adam “MCA” Yauch—one third of the legendary Beastie Boys—has a park named after him. This week the New York City Department of Parks held a ceremony officially changing the name of Brooklyn Heights’ Palmetto Playground to Adam Yauch Park.
Brooklyn Borough president Marty Markovitz was joined by Yauch’s fellow Beastie Boys members Adam “Ad-Rock” Horovitz and Michael “Mike D” Diamond as the playground, which Yauch frequented as a youth, was renamed in his honor. There was virtually no resistance to a social media campaign to have the playground’s name changed as a tribute to Yauch.
Yauch passed away on May 4, 2012 at the age of 47 after losing a battle to throat cancer. During the ceremony, Ad-Rock paid homage to his fallen friend with this quote:
Honored to celebrate the naming of Adam Yauch Park b/c “Like the Wu tang clan, Beastie Boys is for the children” – Ad rock
