Album Review: Salaam Remi – Grass Is Greener Soundtrack
Most of you are probably familiar with the new Netflix‘s marijuana-based documentary Grass Is Greener that dropped on 4/20.
The documentary was produced by legendary Yo! Mtv Raps host Fab 5 Freddy. Gathering musicians, authors, writers, professors and scientists to talk about trials and tribulations of marijuana, from the jazz era, reggae and Rasta movement to the hip-hop movement of today. In a large sea of weed-themed documentaries, this one has to be one of the best ones so far.
Producer Saalam Remi (responsible for the careers of The Fugees, Nas, Amy Winehouse…) has gathered different artists and recorded 12 songs to give the documentary a proper mood. The soundtrack maybe misses usual ganja suspects such as Method Man, Redman, B-Real or Snoop Dogg, but it is still a banger. Smif-N-Wessun, The LOX, Bun B, Black Thought from The Roots are representing for the Hip-Hop side but a soundtrack like this one simply cannot go without sounds of reggae so we got Bob‘s son Stephen Marley and the dancehall legend Spragga Benz. The soundtrack also features the soul music legend Betty Wright and a marvellous instrumental jazz tune by The Flying Buddha Allstars.
The music is diverse but the message is one, and every one of those artists are here to share a story about the plant they adore & it sounds pretty damn good. Legalize it, don’t criticize it…
Another one from our new music editor Re:tro Flava.
