25 Things You Didn’t Know About Gang Starr
Few hip-hop groups have crafted a sound as instantly recognizable as Gang Starr. Whether it’s Guru’s comforting, gravely baritone or the beats DJ Premier handcrafted using samples and his signature bounce, once they arrived on the scene in the late ’80s rap fans knew they found something special. Throughout their 14-year career, the group reached the highest highs and the lowest lows. There were classic albums and there were fist fights. There were tracks where it seemed that Guru and Premo were tailor made for each other and there were times when one or the other were on the verge of leaving the group.
Despite their sometimes rollercoaster-esque relationship, fans overwhelmingly remember the group for the endless amount of classic material they delivered, particularly albums like Step in the Arena, Daily Operation, and Hard to Earn. Tragically, Gang Starr’s story ended too soon. In April, 2010, Guru passed away after an extended battle with cancer. If he was still with us, Guru would have turned 53-years-old today.
