Dig Of The Day Pt.II: Slick Rick & Doug E. Fresh – La Di Da Di (1985)
‘Dig Of The Day’ in full effect! Today we goin’ back in da day with a song called La Di Da Di, performed by true old school cats, Doug E. Fresh as the beatboxer and MC Ricky D (later known as Slick Rick) as the rapper. Originally released in 1985 as the B-side to The Show. The song gained reputation as an early hip hop classic. Since it’s release it has been sampled or referenced in many other hip hop songs and here’s just a few artists that sampled it – Redman, DJ Jazzy Jeff and Fresh Prince, De la Soul, Dj Premier, Das Efx, N.W.A., 2Pac, even the others like Mariah Carey and Robbie Williams… The list goes on. Snoop Dogg even covered the song as Lodi Dodi on his debut album Doggystyle. I was makin’ some tapes recently for my brother’s boombox and recorded this song (among crazy others which you’ll hear in future posts) cause it simply had to be done. And I gotta say, I was mad surprised when I realized how many times I heard vocal samples from this song in others. An absolute must hear!
